A commonly used type of mounted unit, pillow block bearings are designed to provide shaft support where the mounting surface is parallel to the shaft axis.Typically self-lubricating and made of cast iron or pressed steel, pillow block bearings are widely used in conveyor systems, such a tube chain conveyors. These bearings are available as light duty, standard duty, and heavy-duty types. Light-duty pillow block bearings feature a narrow inner ring and two set screws; while standard types feature a wide inner ring and two set screws. The heavy-duty types feature a wide inner ring and four set screws.

Pillow block (or plummer housings) are the standard for inch shafts, and are horizontally split and designed for heavy duty operation. There are many seals to choose from. SDAF housings for inch size shafts and heavy thrust loads can be used for spherical roller bearings. SAW pillow block housings are split design. Other types include SNL, large SNL, SONL and SDG configurations.
