  • Smith Systems Inc

    Smith Systems features the Digi-Prox standard inductive proximity sensor, developed specifically for turbine flow meter applications where users require a no drag operating characteristic. These units have a wide supply voltage range to 24 VDC, and are also protected against reverse voltage, overvoltage, and supply surges. Three thread size and types are available: 5/8-18 UNF 2A inch, 3/4-16 UNF 2A inch with voltage protection, and 3/4-16 UNF 2A without voltage protection. In addition to these general application sensors, application-specific designs are stocked, including a sealed housing part with a miniature 3-pin connector, 3/8-24 threaded stainless steel housing for sensing a magnetic pole, and another model appropriate for turbine flow meter-related uses.

    Schneider Electric offers both inductive and capacitative proximity sensors. The former are available in auto-adaptable, dedicated flush, and non-flush versions, with styles that include 6.5 to 30 mm tubular mounting barrel sensors, flat profile sensors, limit-switch style sensors (with 5-position turret head), and cubic-style. These are meant to detect ferrous and non-ferrous objects. Capacitatiive sensors, by contrast, are able to detect insulating materials, non-metal objects, fluid levels, and granular material levels. Two styles are available, from AC or DC powered barrel sensors in 12, 18, 30 mm sizes, to Block Type C sensors that are cubic in shape and capable of working in difficult or aggressive environments (e.g., dropping, corrosive fluids, submersion, etc.).

  • Cook Industrial Electric Co Inc

    Cook Industrial Electric Co. is a distributor of Balluff inductive proximity sensors. Products come in sizes 3 mm, 4 mm, M8 x 1, and M18 x 1, and are housed in either stainless steel, nickel-plated brass, or chrome-plated brass. Sensing ranges from 0.8 mm to 20 mm, and lengths from 20 mm to 50 mm. Mounting options are flush, non-flush, and quasi.

  • Autonics USA

    Nearly 300 styles of proximity sensors are available through Autotonics. Cylindrical inductive proximity sensors come in shielded, non-shielded, and weld field immune shielded, as well as an assortment of sizes, output types, wire types, and connection types; sensing distances range from 1.5 mm to 15 mm. Next, rectangular inductive proximity sensors are produced in front side, up side, and end detection models and sensing distances from 4 mm to 50 mm. Last are the cylindrical capacitative proximity sensors; these shielded and non-shielded units are offered with 8 or 15 mm sensing ranges and either DC 3-wire or AC 2-wire wire types.

  • RS Electronics

    RS Electronics carries a wide selection of proximity sensors, with many choices in size, housing, etc. The smallest available unit is a 3 mm shielded, nick-plated brass sensor for ferrous metals, manufactured by Omron Industrial Automation. This 2-wire DC, short barrel sensor is IP67 and 1,200 psi washdown rated, and features a 3 to 10 mm sensing distance (or 8 to 20 mm distance on the unshielded version). The largest sensor is an Omron 34 mm non-shielded, ABS/PC housed product for ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Though available in six unique models, each one comes with a standard 6 mm PVC-coated cable connection and 3 to 5 mm sensing distance. In addition to the two sensor options listed above, there are also standard and miniature block style housings, rectangular housings, and subminiature housings.

  • Cincinnati Babbitt, Inc.

    Rockwell Automation provides myriad proximity sensing options such as inductive, capacitative, ultrasonic, and photoelectric models. Inductive products come in general purpose tubular, harsh duty, intrinsically safe, and a variety of other types, while the capacitative units are the 875C nickel-plated brass housed tubular sensor and the plastic housed 875CP, both of which have adjustable sensing distances. Two of the newer products offered by the company are the 871TS food and beverage inductive proximity sensor, which is capable of withstanding high pressures, high temperatures, and corrosive materials, and the 42JS VisiSight photoelectric sensor, which has an ASIC design to provide linear sensitivity adjustment, stability indication, and noise immunity.

    Automation Select features many styles of proximity sensors, including AC and DC powered, short body round, analog output, stainless steel DC triple sensing, rectangular, miniature, and other models. The PY and PD Series of miniature, stainless steel sensors come in 3 , 4, or 5 mm diameters, and feature 0.6 mm standard sensing distance and 1 mm shielded extended sensing distance. Another choice is the 8 mm round, 3-wire DC AE Series, which includes the AE1 and AE6 models with 1.5 to 3 mm shielded sensing distances and 2.5 to 4 mm unshielded sensing distances; and the analog output AE9, with up to 4 mm shielded sensing distance. One last product line worth noting is the rectangular CR/DR/APS Series that includes the 0.8 to 1.5 mm-sensing, 5 x 5 x 25 mm body CR5; 1.5 to 2 mm-sensing, 8 x 8 x 40 mm body CR8; 3 mm shielded- and 6 mm-unshielded sensing DR10; and the compact (12 x 27 x 12 or 7 mm), polycarbonate housed APS.

  • Automation Systems Interconnect

    Automation Systems Interconnect (ASI) features a range of proximity sensor styles, including inductive, capacitative, magnetic, and photoelectric, and both barrel and square/rectangular designs. The inductive proximity sensor is available standard, from 4 mm to 30 mm, or in short, rectangular, or ring-shaped housings. Styles with 6.5 to 30 mm increase ranges, or 180 degree Celsius, high temperature-tolerance are optional. Capacitative sensors are manufactured with either plastic or metal housings, as well as with high temperature operating thresholds, while magnetic sensors operate on either the Hall Effect or Reed contact sensing principle. Lastly, photoelectric proximity sensors come standard as an 18 mm barrel design, but also in miniature square and rectangular housings.

  • Avago Technologies Ltd.

    Avago Technologies offers analog output reflective proximity sensors in small form factor SMT packages. These units detect distances from 0 to 60 mm, and are suitable for use in industrial, automotive, and consumer applications. Also sold are integrated ambient light and proximity sensors that sense light and proximity simultaneously, with a detection distance up to 40 mm. Proximity-detecting products are used commonly in printers to determine out-of-paper status, and in mobile phones, to determine if a phone is near a face and its display can be dimmed to save battery life.

  • Baumer Ltd

    Inductive, capacitative, and ultrasonic proximity sensors are manufactured by Baumer. The inductive products range from 0.4 mm to 20 mm sensing distance, with some response times as low as <0.5 ms, and IP67 rating standard. Capacitative proximity sensors offer 0.5 mm to 30 mm sensing distances, and either shielded or unshielded mounting types; features included on some models include high temperature tolerance, IP65/67 ratings, and adjustable sensing distances. For greater sensing distances, from 30 mm up to 3,000 mm, ultrasonic sensors are made; response times are as high as <160 ms and as low as <7 ms.

    c3controls features a full range of inductive and capacitative proximity sensors for non-contact presence detection of metallic and non-metallic objects. This offering includes nickel-plated, stainless steel, and non-metallic cylindrical and rectangular housings rated Type 1, 2, 3, 3R, 4/4X, 6, 6P, 12, and 13, as well as IP 67 for severe industrial environments. Cylindrical inductive sensors come 2- to 4-wire AC or DC in stainless steel (miniature) or nickel-plated brass (standard size), while rectangular options are made of plastic, 2- to 4-wire DC standard. Meanwhile, 2-wire cylindrical capacitative sensors are offered in AC, DC, or AC/DC for 2-wire, and DC-only for 3- or 4-wire.

    Contrinex manufactures inductive, photoelectric, ultrasonic, and capacitative sensors for proximity detection. Inductive products come in a variety of application types and housing sizes, from food handling to welding, and from cubic 40 x 40 mm to 8 mm diameter. Photoelectronic sensors are constructed with a broad selection of operating principles, such as cold sensor, diffuse, reflex, and through-beam, and rated operating distances up to 50,000 mm. Ultrasonic sensors also provide choices for operating principles, as well as for housing sizes (cubic 40 x 40 mm, M18, M18C, M18W, M30) and sensing ranges (from 0-200 mm to 600-6,000 mm). Finally, capacitative sensors  are made in M12, M18, and M30 sizes, with embeddable or non-embeddable mountings, and operating ranges from 2 to 15 mm.

  • Euchner-USA, Inc.

    Euchner-USA carries many types of inductive cylinder proximity switches for uses like machine tooling, pressing, grinding, packaging, material handling, plastic injection molding, and wood cutting. Sizes range from 8 to 30 mm, and certain models offer short-circuit protection (e.g., EGL). Housing is either nickel-plated brass or stainless steel, with IP67 protection to be oil-, dust-, and water-tight, and an operating temperature range from -13 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit. Sensing distance is 1 to 15 mm, depending on the selected model.

  • Fargo Controls, Inc.

    Fargo Controls offers inductive, capacitative, magnetic, and photoelectric proximity sensors. Inductive models are constructed in many diameter sizes from 4 to 30 mm; in rectangular shapes; and in ring configurations with 5 to 100 mm hole sizes. Operating distances are as low as 0.8 mm and as great as 10 to 60 mm adjustable. Capacitative sensors are available in 18, 30, and 40 mm diameter sizes that have sensing distance ranges from up to 5 mm to 35 mm. Lastly, magnetic sensors for detecting magnets instead of metals are offered in 6.5, 8, 10, and 12 mm diameters or in a rectangular shape, while the photoelectric sensors come in standard 18 mm diameter with a 1,500 cm through-beam.

  • HTM Sensors

    HTM Sensors manufactures a comprehensive line of inductive proximity sensors and other sensing solutions. The standard product comes in AC or DC and shielded or unshielded, and depending on those selections, M8 through M30 sizes and sensing distances up to 5, 10, or 15 mm. Extended range proximity sensors that increase range by 100% to 150% are also carried; the quick-connect models have 4-view LED windows built into the barrel for high visibility. Other choices are the long range inductive proximity sensor, with 3x the standard range; MetalHead sensors, which are single piece, stainless steel parts; SpatterGuard sensors, coated with PTFE for harsh industrial environments; weld field immune sensors; and miniature proximity sensors in ultra small housings starting at 3 mm.

  • Keyence Corp. of America

    Keyence features three series of proximity sensors. The EM Series is an amplifier-in-cable compact proximity sensor that has a sensor head diameter as small as 3 mm for the cylindrical type and M5 for the threaded type. Next is the self-contained EZ/EV Series proximity sensor that offers an easy-to-see output indicator, flexible sensor head joint, and optional fluoro-polymer resin coating for spatter resistance. Last is the long-distance ES Series separate amplifier proximity sensor, which provides a detecting distance two times that of conventional sensors and a wide selection of sensor head types.

  • Laser Technology, Inc.

    Laser Technology manufactures laser sensors for proximity detection, position and equipment monitoring, and other applications. These include the ULS APD-G universal laser sensor, as well as the system integration-equivalent ULS OEM-CG, for long-range capability and high accuracy. A few other selections are the 12V Impulse XL Industrial Sensor, which includes a 4x zoom scope for pinpointing targets; the industrial wide beam sensor, for applications limited to 4 to 20 mA output requirements; and the 3 and 12 VDC Impulse 100 LR industrial sensors, with a 1x scope and hand strap for easy transportation.

  • Migatron Corp.

    Migatron offers ultrasonic sensors for proximity detection, even in difficult environments. Their self-contained sensors provide ranges from 2" to 40' with a choice of narrow or broad beam, while their intrinsically-safe and explosion-proof sensors provide a range from 4" to 18' and response times from 120 ms down to 85 ms. Other selections include high accuracy sensors that can measure from 3" to 16" at an accuracy +/-0.002" and resolution +/-0.001", and close range sensors for applications in which object detection does not exceed 30".

  • Omega Engineering, Inc.

    Omega Engineering sells a variety of proximity sensors, including the E57 Series inductive sensor with its choice of 12, 18, or 30 mm diameters, standard 360-degree status indicator, and 2 to 15 mm sensing range. The E57 is also available in small diameter models (5 mm, 8 mm) with a 0.8 to 3 mm range, while the iPROX Series inductive sensor offers long range sensing up to 29 mm. One final product is the PRX102-12N shielded inductive sensor, which is made for humid, dirty, oily, and/or dusty applications and for object detection up to 1, 2, or 5 mm.

  • Omron

    Omron proximity sensors are produced in models that use high-frequency oscillation to detect ferrous and non-ferrous metal objects, and capacitative models to sense non-metal objects. Cylindrical models include the E2E in 2- and 3-wire variations, with sensing distances ranging from 1.5 mm to 20 mm, depending on size, whether or not the part is shielded or unshielded, and if it is AC or DC. Meanwhile, the TL-W is a rectangular sensor that is 6 mm thick and provides sensing up to 3 mm. Two capacitative series are also available, the E2K-X and E2K-L; the former has a fixed sensing distance that requires no sensitivity adjustment, while the latter fits pipe diameters from 8 to 11 mm or 12 to 26 mm, and is unaffected by the color of the pipe or liquid.
