HVAC • Heat Pumps

A heat pump is a machine that moves heat from one location, or source, to another location, or heat sink. Unlike an air conditioner, a heat pump can heat a home or cool it. In heating mode, the outdoor coil becomes an evaporator and the indoor coil becomes a condenser that absorbs heat from the refrigerant and dissipates it to the air flowing through it. In cooling mode, the setup, and thus the effect, is reversed. Heat pumps are used in a variety of applications. Most commonly they are found in HVAC, but they are also used to heat water in swimming pools and domestic water heaters. Leading manufacturers: Rheem, Carrier, Trane, Amana, Goodman and Bryant.
