Motors • Electric Motors

Electric motors turn electrical energy into mechanical energy, by using magnetic fields and current-carrying conductors.

Electric motors convert electricity to mechanical energy typically through the interaction of magnetic fields and conductors. Either AC or DC-powered, electric motors are classified by their electric power source, internal construction, application, and type of motion. Rated output power is also used to categorize motors, as motors with less than 746 watts are known as fractional horsepower motors. Types of electric motors include: AC induction (shaded pole), AC induction (split-phase capacitor), universal motor, AC synchronous, stepper DC, brushless DC, brushed DC, pancake DC, and servo motors. Within industrial and manufacturing processes, electric motors are used to turn saws and blades, and spin gears and mixers. Electric motors are also found in industrial fans, conveyor belts, blowers, pumps, machine tools, power tools, household appliances, robotics, vibrating machines, and oscillating machines.
