Defined as a motor and speed reducer combination , a gear motor provides high torque at a low shaft speed.

Defined as a motor and speed reducer combination – where the two units are flanged and feature one output shaft – or a motor where two units are closely coupled, a gear motor provides high torque at a low shaft speed. The reduction gear trains used in gear motors are designed to reduce output speed while increasing the torque. Reduction gearing allows small electric motors to provide significant motive force for lifts, winches, medical tables, jacks and robotics. Gear motors can be large enough to lift a building or tiny enough to drive a small clock. Most industrial gear motors are AC-powered, fixed-speed devices, however there are fixed-gear-ratio, variable-speed motors that provide greater control. DC gear motors are used in automotive applications such as power winches on trucks, windshield wiper motors, and power window motors.
