Power Transmission • Shaft Collars

Shaft collar is a simple machine component found in motors and gearboxes. The collar is a mechanical stop that locates components and bearing faces.

A shaft collar is a component in power transmissions that is used as a mechanical stop, locating component, and/or bearing face. The two most common types are the set screw style, which utilizes a solid ring and screws that protrude toward the center and dig into the shaft, and clamping style, which is compressed by screws and locked into place around the shaft. Shaft collars are usually made from aluminum, steel, stainless steel, or alloyed steel, and coated with zinc, chromium, or black oxide. They are generally used in washdown applications such as food processing, as well as in agricultural implements, office machines, exercise equipment, mixers, and printing presses. Leading manufacturers: Climax Metal Products, Stafford Manufacturing, Ruland, Collars and Couplings.

  • Boston Gear

Boston Gear's shaft collars are available in several configurations. The setscrew collar is for simple positioning on a shaft. The threaded clamp collar provides a higher axial holding force. The 1-piece clamp collar provides a more uniform holding force on the shaft. The 2-piece clamp collar provides a higher and more uniform holding force.

  • Collars & Couplings, Inc.

Their single split and double split collars come in low profile and heavy profile configurations. Their threaded collars come in single split and double split configurations.

  • Pacific Industries, Inc.

PII, Pacific Industries, Inc., offers single set screw shaft collars that support the shaft by tightening the set screw against the shaft itself. Their double set screw solid shaft collars have a two set screw configuration that increase the load capacity of the shaft collar. Their solid stainless steel collars are for corrosive environments and are also used in food handling operations.
