A type of transducer, a load cell converts force into a measurable electrical output. The conversion is indirect and happens in two stages.While there are more than 30 types of load cells, strain gauge load cells are the most commonly used type for industrial applications – with the second most common being hydraulic load cells.Strain gauge load cells convert the load acting on them into electrical signals. Types of strain gauge load cells include: bending beam, shear beam, canister load cells, ring, pancake, button and washer. These load cells are commonly used for electronic crane scales, platform scales, portable weigh scales, force measurement, hopper/tank/silo weighing, and inventory monitoring.Hydraulic load cells are force -balance devices that measure weight as a change in pressure of the internal filling fluid. Another common type of load cell, pneumatic load cells also operate on the force-balance principle, but use multiple dampener chambers to provide higher accuracy than a hydraulic device. Other load cells types include helical, fiber optic, piezo-resistive, bending, shear, compression, tension, and vibrating wire.
