Used to detect the presence of nearby objects without making any physical contact by emitting an electromagnetic or electrostatic field to detect objects.

By emitting an electromagnetic or electrostatic field, proximity sensors are able to detect the presence of nearby objects without making physical contact. Because of the absence of mechanical parts and lack of physical contact between sensor and sensed object, proximity sensors are known for their high reliability and long functional life.Types of proximity sensors include: inductive, capacitive, capacitive displacement, magnetic, reflective, sonar, and radar.Proximity sensors are commonly used for industrial automation applications and industrial machinery vibration monitoring. When used for industrial machinery vibration monitoring, proximity sensors measure the distance between a shaft and its support bearing – commonly within large steam turbines, compressors, and motors that utilize sleeve-type bearings. The maximum distance a proximity sensor can detect is known as its nominal range.

They have a maximum load of 200 mA or 350 mA.

    Smith Systems Inc. manufactures Digi-Prox inductive magnetic proximity sensors. Designed to handle a variety of temperatures, the sensors are resistant to oil, dirt and moisture. Available as two and three-wire models, the sensors provide no-drag flow measurement for high accuracy, and can also be used in turbine flow meters. The proximity sensors are available with a number of supply voltages and are compatible with digital equipment.
