Used to control DC motors, AC motors, and solenoids on industrial production lines, a solid-state relay is an electronic switch that produces a voltage between a metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) source and its gate – causing the MOSFET to turn on.Unlike mechanical relays, solid-state relays feature no moving parts, which means no wear and increased lifetime for the relay. Solid-state relays are also faster than electromechanical relays, as solid-state relays’ switching times are dependent on the time needed to power a light-emitting diode. This time typically ranges from microseconds to milliseconds.Solid-state relay types include photo-coupled – which are controlled by a low voltage signal that is optically isolated from the load - transformer-coupled, and hybrid.

Each relay's maximum load current ranges from 3A to 40A depending on model and type. Rated control voltage of each relay varies from 4VDC to 24VDC.
